FICCI will be celebrating Harvey Keitel's long and successful career with a tribute to the actor, who will be gracing us with his presence in Cartagena.
This year, the Cartagena International Film Festival (FICCI) pays tribute to one of the most celebrated actors of the second half of the twentieth century. With a career spanning 40 years and 130 films, Keitel has incarnated an array of memorable characters alongside talented directors such as Martin Scorsese, Ridley Scott, Quentin Tarantino and Paul Schrader. A familiar face on the American movie scene, he has also explored opportunities further afield in the masteful hands of acclaimed director Jane Campion from New Zealand and Theodoros Angelopoulos from Greace.
After ten years treading the boards in his native New York, Keitel made a name for himself in the movies after appearing in the Martin Scorsese films Who's That Knocking At My Door? (1967), Mean Streets (1973) and Taxi Driver (1976). Not content to be pigeonholed in the tough-guy parts that initially brought him fame, he has experimented with other genres and themes, surprising us every time with his enviable range. In the Nineties, after doing the Ridley Scott road movie Thelma and Louis (1991), Quentin Tarantino's directorial debut Reservoir Dogs (1992) and his second film Pulp Fiction (1994). Keitel's name continues to pop up time and time again on the credits of countless productions, including Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for his performance in Barry Levinson's Bugsy (1991) and the Special Jury Prize at the Berlin Film Festival for Wayne Wang's Smoke (1995).
By way of tribute to this multifaceted actor, FICCI will be screening: Mean Streets, Reservoir Dogs, Bad Lieutenant, The Piano, Ulysses' Gaze, Moonrise Kingdom, The Last Temptation of Christ, Taxi Driver and Blue Collar. The latter three were written by Paul Schrader, another of our special guests at this year's festival.
The Piano will be screened on Friday, February 22 at 6:30 pm at Teatro Adolfo Mejía, where Keitel will be presented with an India Catalina Award and will have a public conversation with Festival Director, Monika Wagenberg. On Saturday 23 at 11:00 am, Keitel will attend a press conference. Like the rest of the program, both events are admission free.
This program is organized thanks to the support of the Hotel Sofitel Legend Santa Clara Cartagena, Hotel Agua Barú and Casa Pestagua. The Festival especially thanks the support of the French Ambassador in Colombia, Pierre-Jean Vandoorne.
