These are the 13 films that will sparkle in FICCI's GEMS Section
FICCI surveys the international cinema circuit to identify recent works from the masters of cinema and the stand-out films of the year.
Chosen from the world's most prestigious festivals, FICCI has collected a group of films to be part of this year's Gems -- a competitive category at the festival since last year. The films are nominated for the RCN Gems Award consisting of a promotional plan worth U$50.000 through the RCN TV channel for the release of the film in Colombia.
Among the films that the Colombian audience will have the opportunity to watch for the first time are winners from some of the world's most prestigious film festivals. The French film Le Passé (The Past), won Best Actress (Berénice Beijo, The Artist) at Cannes and was directed by Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi who won an Oscar for A Separation (2011). Another French film and winner at Cannes for Best Directing in the Certain Regard section is Stranger by the Lake by Alain Guiraudie, a film that also won a Queer Palm for its subject matter – love between two men.
Loaded with excess, luxury and humor, Italian La Grande Belleza by Paolo Sorrentino, is the winner of the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film and was recently nominated for an Oscar in the same category. Continuing with European films, this time from Romania, a country that in the past years has surprised us with its outstanding cinema, comes a film as acclaimed as it is powerful about power and corruption. Child's pose, by director Calin Peter Netzer, won the Golden Bear in Berlin.
Rounding out the list of European Gems comes one of the most powerful, affecting and beautiful films of the year from Poland. Winning awards at every festival where it's been show,Ida, is the latest work from Pawel Pawlikowski, a special guest of this year's Festival. FICCI will also present a complete retrospective of his work.
For the first time, the 2014 Gems will include Middle Eastern participation, with one Israeli and one Palestinian film. Omar, from Palestinian director Hany Abu-Assad, recently nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Film, won the Special Jury Prize at the Cannes film festival in the Certain Regard section. The Israeli film Bethlehem, by Yuval Adler, won best film at the Venice Film Festival. Both movies deal, from very different perspectives, with the complex subject of the occupied territories.
FICCI will also have an unprecedented Asian representation this year. There are three Asian films that, among their many awards, are all Cannes winners. Directed by one of the region's best-known and successful director, Jia Zhang-Ke, we present Tian zhu ding (A touch of sin), which brings together four high-profile media cases in China and speaks to the violence created by the country's economic system. The multi award-winning Soshite chichi ni naru(Like Father, Like Son) is a heartbreaking and emotional story about a family that discovers their son was switched at birth, and is directed by Hirokasu Kore Eda. From Singapore comesIlo Ilo by Anthony Chen, winner of the Caméra d'Or at Cannes, where it received a 15-minute standing ovation after its screening. This drama tells of the difficulties faced by a Philipino maid when she starts working for an middle upper-class family whose relationship, like the country's economy, are falling apart.
From our own continent, the Gems section will include two of the most awarded Latin American films of 2013: The co-production La Jaula de Oro (Mexico- Spain) from Diego Quemada Diez is a moving story about the reality lived by thousands of Latinos, in this case children, who attempt to cross the U.S. Border illegally. Gloria, from Chilean Sebastián Lelio, is a witty and emotional drama about a women who, at almost 60, must face a new single life.
The Gems selection is completed by Short term 12 from North America's Destin Cretton. A multi-awarded film at prestigious festivals such as South by Southwest and Locarno, this is a powerfully human story shot in a youth counseling center.
These are the 13 Gems that FICCI has selected for its viewers at the 54th edition of the Latin America's oldest film festival, held this year from March 13 to the 19th.
Remember that the 2014 festival now has increased capacity provided by the two additional Cine Colombia theaters at the Centro Comercial Castellana.
